Teen charged in fatal accident has preliminary hearing

Pennsylvania residents in the Lehigh Valley may recall the deadly crash that took place back on June 25. That fatal accident took the life of a 50-year-old Northampton, Pennsylvania, man. The 19-year-old male who crashed into the deceased man's pickup truck had a preliminary hearing on Oct. 26.

During the preliminary hearing, testimony came out that the Palmer Township teen was driving at speeds in excess of 100 mph when he crashed into the victim's truck. The accident happened on Route 22. The teen is facing charges of homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, driving at an unsafe speed and careless and reckless driving. His case has been forwarded to the Northampton County Court.

State police have reported that when the pickup truck was hit, it was pushed into the right lane into the path of a third vehicle. The subsequent impact caused the pickup to flip onto its side and into the abutment of the Bethman Road overpass just east of Route 33. The defendant's vehicle flipped over onto its roof, and the teen sustained minor injuries. A Pennsylvania state trooper testified that, according to GPS equipment, the defendant's car was being driven at speeds of at least 105 mph.

This young man is certainly facing serious charges in this fatal accident. But his conviction in criminal court will not bring back the victim or help the family cover expenses brought on by the victim's death. While a conviction does not necessarily guarantee anything, it can bolster a civil case seeking monetary damages for wrongful death. When a family suffers a tragedy such as this, they may find it beneficial to consult with a Lehigh Valley area personal injury attorney to explore what options are available to them.
