Pennsylvania honor student killed in car accident

It is every Pennsylvania parent's nightmare when a teen needlessly dies as a result of an accident. No one wants to hear such tales, and the loss of a young, promising life is a tragedy to not only a family but also a community. Sadly, this happened on June 4 when an honor-roll high school student was struck and killed in a fatal accident near his home.

It was 3:15 in the afternoon, and the 15-year-old boy had just been dropped off at home by the school bus when he decided to cross the street to check the mailbox. As he began to return across the street, he was struck and killed in a fatal accident. Pennsylvania police say he was killed as a result of the impact with a Smart Car driven by a 62-year-old woman from Shippensburg who was headed east on Pine Road.

It is not yet clear precisely what happened to cause the fatal accident. Pennsylvania authorities believe the boy may not have heard the quiet-running Smart Car; however they are investigating to determine if driver error may have been a factor in the tragic collision. This investigation will likely follow standard protocol and could include not only toxicology tests on the driver but also a review of any eyewitness statements and physical evidence such as skid marks and damage to the vehicle that struck the boy.

Losing a child to a fatal car accident is something no parent ever hopes to go through. However, those families who have lost loved ones to car accidents should know that they have legal options. While no amount of money could ever replace a family member, if a driver was found negligent in causing or contributing to a fatal crash, he or she can be held responsible through a civil lawsuit. A wrongful death lawsuit can result in financial compensation for medical costs and funeral expenses, allowing a grieving family to focus on helping one another through such a difficult time.
