Products liability: Ground beef recalled in Pennsylvania

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service made an announcement today regarding a recall on fresh ground beef. Apparently, nearly 30,000 pounds of meat from Cargill Meat Solutions in Pennsylvania could possibly be contaminated with Salmonella. The USDA classified this particular products liability recall as a Class 1, High Level Health Risk.

The meat distributed was for wholesale and further processing. The meat was 85/15 quality and was sold in 14-pound packages. There were three packages packed to each case, which weighed approximately 42 pounds. The meat was then processed into smaller packages and fitted with different labels. Therefore, to differentiate this meat from other meat, one would need to look at the USDA mark of inspection and look for "EST. 9400."

The meat should no longer be on the shelves to sell, as the use-by date has passed. However, that doesn't mean that the meat is not in a number of people's freezers, or already consumed. The meat packages were first produced May 25, 2012, and shipped for further distribution to three different states: Maine, New York and Connecticut.

The USDA FSIS became aware of the possible Salmonella poisoning when several patients became sick with the illness. Some were even hospitalized due to the Salmonella food poisoning. If you feel that you have been exposed to this meat, it is important to see a health care professional as soon as possible.

Sometimes, products liability recalls can help prevent illness and potentially save lives. However, in a number of other cases, the product recall comes a little too late, and people are injured. The one thing that Pennsylvania residents would do well to keep in mind is the fact that they have rights when it comes to defective products, and it would be beneficial to seek assistance in ensuring those rights are fully protected as one works toward a favorable settlement.
