5.5 million children suffer sports injuries every year

Every year millions of children and teenagers suffer from sports-related injuries in the United States. When these injuries are caused by another party's negligence, parents may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault party, seeking monetary damages. While parents, grandparents and other caregivers may think that organized sports are safe because they are under the supervision of a coach and other adults, this is not always true.

Statistics released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control show that approximately 2 million high school athletes and 3.5 million children under the age of 14 are injured while participating in sports every year. The CDC also reports that more than half of those injuries are preventable.

One of the most common types of sports injury is overuse. These injuries account for almost half of the injuries suffered by athletes in middle and high school. Another contributing factor is that proper safety precautions are not always heeded during practice because the perceived risk of injury can be lower than that of an actual game. According to the CDC, 33 percent of parents do not require their children to follow the same safety procedures during practice even though approximately 62 percent of all injuries that occur in organized sports are suffered during practice.

Some people think that only individual people can be named as defendants in personal injury lawsuits, but defendants can also be organizations and manufacturers of defective products. Parents or other guardians whose children have been injured while playing sports may want to talk to an attorney to see if the case presents any grounds for a personal injury suit.
