Serious injuries can occur during holiday celebrations

We've now entered the holiday season, which for many is filled with fun outings, celebrations and time with family. Tragically, injuries and accidents also plague holiday events, especially as people gather for recreational activities that are out of the daily norm. In fact, in another state, one family is dealing with serious injuries to a teen after participating in trick-or-treating.

According to reports, the 14-year-old girl was trick-or-treating when she was hit by a vehicle. She was then dragged by another vehicle approximately two miles. It is possible that, due to the time and nature of the trick-or-treating events going on at the time, the second driver did not realize the teen was being dragged. When emergency personnel arrived on scene, they could not find the girl at first because of this.

This is an extremely scary situation for many parents and families to consider, but it is not an isolated incident. Trick-or-treaters have been injured by motor vehicles before, and this was not the only such incident this year. As the other upcoming holidays approach, there is an uptick in the number of motor vehicle and other accidents.

Some examples of increasing risk for recreational or motor vehicle accidents during the holidays include the heavier than normal vehicular traffic. People are also engaging in fun activities like backyard football on Thanksgiving and sledding during the first snowfall of the year. These fun family traditions shouldn't be given up because there is a risk of injury. But families should, however, take extra precautions to safeguard everyone.

If the unthinkable happens and you or your family member is injured during holiday revelry, then understanding your legal options is important. Serious injuries can mean losing more than a moment of merriment, and knowing your options for recovery can help you protect your future moments of joy.
