Stay out of the 'no zone'

It's not always possible to protect yourself from every danger on the road. But when you're sharing the highway with big-rig trucks, staying visible to truck drivers can help you avoid potentially catastrophic accidents.

Interstate crash kills 3, sends 73 to the hospital

A weather-related accident on Pennsylvania's Interstate 78 on the morning of February 13 has left three people dead and 73 injured in the wake of a 64-vehicle pileup. The accident occurred in the westbound lane of Interstate 78 in Bethel Township. Twelve commercial vehicles, including box trucks and tractor-trailers, were reportedly involved in the crash, which shut down both lanes of the highway throughout the night.

TRUCK DRIVERS' MEDICAL CONDITIONS PUT OTHERS AT RISK

An accident this past summer in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains illustrates the dangers that drivers can face when they share the road with truck drivers who have medical conditions. In this instance, a truck driver blacked out, and his truck crossed the median and struck a bus filled with Italian tourists. Three people were killed, including the bus driver, and 13 people were injured.

TRUCK DRIVER IN TRACY MORGAN CASE SEEKS DISMISSAL

Kevin Roper, The Wal-Mart truck driver who slammed into a limo carrying Tracy Morgan in June 2014, injuring Morgan and others and killing comedian James McNair, is seeking to have the criminal charges against him dismissed. Roper's attorney, David Glassman, is claiming that the criminal charges against his client -- one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto -- should be dismissed because his client won't be able to get a fair trial in light of the publicity surrounding the case. The civil lawsuits against Roper have already been settled.

Pennsylvania turnpike multi-car crash involves overturned truck

Being involved in a collision is often a serious event. When a crash involves a large vehicle such as a semi-truck, it is likely that the accident will involve multiple vehicles, resulting in a massive accident site. A truck crash not only impacts those directly involved, but also affects numerous travelers on the roadway. When a crash involves an overturned truck, this often means a huge clean up and a large investigation site. Road closures help with the investigation process, helping those harmed in the incident better understand the cause and liability in the crash.

The severity of Pennsylvanian commercial truck crashes

As a previous post highlighted, Pennsylvanian truck safety is imperative. However, despite the efforts to address the causes of truck crashes, such as driving errors, serious and fatal trucks still occur. Commercial vehicles such as semi-trucks and 18-wheelers play an important role in society, which makes it vital to understand the severity of the situation.

Could new technology reduce truck accidents?

Residents in Pennsylvania are aware of the important role the trucking industry plays in interstate and intrastate commerce. Seeing trucks on the roadways means that goods and material are being timely transported to their destination. Trucks on the roadways also means encountering certain dangers and hazards. Although federal trucking regulations and specialized technology have worked to address the concerns and hazards involved in the trucking industry, this does not eliminate the occurrences of truck accidents.

How is the condition of tires a violation of trucking laws?

It is not uncommon for drivers in Pennsylvania to encounter large trucks traveling on the roadways. Whether it is night or day, a semi-truck or a tractor-trailer, these massive vehicles frequently travel on major and minor roadways to make a delivery or a shipment. No matter if it is a short trip or one across the state or across the nation, there are trucking laws in place to ensure the safe operation of trucks. This not only means that a truck driver is properly trained and operating up to a certain amount of hours, but also concerns the inspection and care of the parts of the vehicle as well.

How do trucking regulations reduce truck driver fatigue?

Drivers in Pennsylvania understand that there is a growing concern about fatigued drivers. While it is apparent that various types of vehicles will travel during the late night hours and travel long distance, one vehicle that is frequently seen traveling on the roadways at all hours of the day and night are large trucks. These semi trucks and tractor-trailers often carry large shipments or deliveries a long distance, traveling through several states across the nation. In order to ensure the safety of truck drivers and other traveling on the roadways, federal trucking regulations have been put in place, but some residents question how these regulations prevent or reduce truck driver fatigue.
