Trucker causes crash, sends 87-year-old man to hospital

On Oct. 12, a multiple-vehicle accident occurred near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in South Whitehall that appears to have been caused by a drunk truck driver. A 56-year-old man from Allentown, Pennsylvania, has been arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding, suspicion of DUI, accidents involving an attended vehicle and driving with a suspended license. He was also charged with eight other traffic infractions. At least one person was sent to the hospital with serious injuries from the collision.

The incident began when a Pennsylvania state trooper saw the man commit a traffic violation, after which the trooper sought to pull him over. The truck entered a McDonald's parking lot and stopped but fled the scene after a few moments. The trooper pursued the man, and the pickup truck ran a red light at Lincoln Drive and Hamilton Boulevard, which caused the crash. The truck ultimately came to a stop on Hamilton just beyond Cedar Crest Boulevard. Police say he appeared intoxicated, and they placed him under arrest.

Three cars were involved in the accident. An 87-year-old Allentown man was rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital, where his condition was unknown. A second driver may also have been injured, but the details could not be confirmed. The third victim suffered damage to his car but was not taken to the hospital.

While the drunk trucker will now have to face criminal proceedings, he may also have to face civil proceedings. Even though the first thought is for the full recovery of the elderly man, he and his family may wish to consult a Pennsylvania attorney experienced in personal injury law. Pennsylvania law specifically provides for the right of innocent victims to recover monetary damages for serious injuries caused by the negligent or reckless conduct of others.
