Hit-and-run accidents the Lehigh Valley

Three recent articles about hit-and-run accidents appeared in the local Lehigh Valley news, one in the Morning Call and two in the Express Times. One crash involved a vehicle on I-78, a notoriously dangerous highway, the other involved a 13-year-old pedestrian in Bangor and most recently involving a pedestrian in Bethlehem.  It's difficult enough when you're the victim of another driver's negligence in a car accident. That difficulty is compounded when the person responsible for the accident does not stop or flees the scene.

If you are the victim of a hit-and-run accident, you must contact the police immediately. The police may be able to track down the perpetrator. Also, if you are injured in the accident, you will need to make a police report so that you can provide the report to your automobile insurance company. You can obtain first party medical benefits from your own insurance company, however, you must promptly make a claim with them.

These incidents also emphasizes the importance of having uninsured motorist coverage on your own automobile policy. If you are the victim of a hit-and-run collision and the vehicle that hit you is never located, you can pursue what is called an uninsured motorist claim with your own insurance company, if you purchased that extra layer of protection on your own policy. If you do not have uninsured coverage on your policy, you should consider adding it to your policy so if you or a family member is injured by a driver with no insurance or if you are the victim of a hit-and-run, you won't be completely without recourse.
