Texting while driving again - study results prove to be alarming

It was just a few weeks ago that I was writing a post on texting and driving but here I am again. USA Today reported a study done by AT&T with disappointing and scary results.

According to the study 49% of adults surveyed admitted they text while driving, despite 98% answering that they know it is unsafe to text or email while driving. The 49% of adults is compared to 43% of teens who admit texting and driving. Look, both numbers are bad but talk about bad examples. As I drive around the Valley, I see people texting or emailing behind their wheel every day. I don't know if it's the boredom of sitting in traffic or the pressures of work or personal lives that make us feel like we cannot let an email go for more than an hour without responding but whatever the reason, there is simply no excuse.

Maybe you won't kill anyone. Maybe. But, whatever project you're texting or emailing an employee about or whatever perceived fire you're attempting to put out at work or at home will surely be complicated by the car crash you will cause, even it isn't a fatal crash.

Virginia Tech Transportation Institute research says that sending or receiving a text breaks a driver's concentration for an average of 4.6 seconds. As this Yahoo blogger points out, according to USA Today, at 55 mph, 4.6 seconds is enough time to cover the length of a football field. How scary would it be to blindfold yourself and run down a football field? That's an open field; now picture that same distance with cars, trucks, motorcycles, pedestrians and you, behind the wheel of tons of steel.
