Medical misdiagnosis: Man wrongly told he had fatal brain tumor

Pennsylvania residents may be interested in a particular medical misdiagnosis of a man in another state. He had gone to the hospital, complaining of chest pains and, after inserting a stent for his heart, was told he had a fatal brain tumor. This misdiagnosis was, of course, traumatic for this patient.

The victim was understandably upset. So much so that he attempted suicide, though his son was reportedly able to talk him out of it. A hospice nurse who had been sent to care for him insisted on taking him to another doctor. He was reevaluated, and it was determined he had only suffered a series of small strokes.

The judge in the case determined the internist who misdiagnosed the man was guilty of negligence. The victim was awarded a lump sum amount, as well as amounts for each day he suffered emotionally, thinking he would not be alive much longer. The victim prepared for his death in various ways, and the court ordered the VA to reimburse him for those expenses incurred.

It was found that, had an MRI been given, the fact that the victim suffered a stroke would have been discovered. Although the original internist claims he advised an MRI, one was never rendered. The victim was extremely depressed about his diagnosis and he refused any treatment.

For this victim, all has turned out well. For Pennsylvania residents who think they may have a misdiagnosis, especially if it is rendered terminal, a second or even third opinion is advisable. The mental anguish alone is worth either the confirmation or the reversal of a life-altering diagnosis.
