Wrongful death lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania court

A wrongful death suit has been filed in a Pennsylvania federal court by a woman who claims her husband died as a result of taking the drug Pradaxa. Her husband had been on the medication for several years to treat non-valvular atrial fibrillation, or a problem with the heart's rhythm. The wrongful death suit is against the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the drug.

The pharmaceutical company marketed Pradaxa as a better alternative for the prevention of strokes than Warfarin, the drug previously prescribed to those who might be at risk for a stroke. The suit says the company did not do an adequate job of advising patients of the risks of taking the drug. Approval by the FDA for the drug did not occur until late 2010, but the man had been taking it since 2007.

The woman feels that the use of the drug caused bleeding in parts of her husband's brain, which led to his death. She says that, unlike Warfarin, there is nothing that will control the bleeding in a person who has been taking the medication, and that the manufacturer has not made known to the medical community that information. The suit gives an estimated number of people in the United States whose deaths are related to taking Pradaxa as well as numbers for those who are still living but have had health problems after taking the drug.

The plaintiff is asking for financial compensation of over $75,000 to cover various expenses and the emotional pain and suffering she has incurred through this ordeal. The wrongful death suit has a variety of complaints listed against the pharmaceutical company, including negligence and fraudulent concealment. Pennsylvania residents who feel they have a similar grievance should explore their options on receiving compensation and justice for a painful situation.
