NHL accused of compromising player safety

It is extremely important for all sports leagues, whether they be school leagues, college leagues, children's recreational leagues, adult recreational leagues or professional leagues, to properly protect the safety of their players. One concern that particularly arises in regards to professional sports leagues, given the large amounts of money that professional sports can involve, is that such leagues may be tempted to compromise player safety in the name of profits. A recent federal lawsuit has accused the National Hockey League of succumbing to this temptation.

The lawsuit is a class action lawsuit and it was brought by nine hockey players who say that they suffered brain injuries while playing in the NHL. The players allege that the NHL failed to take adequate steps to prevent brain injuries among its players and promoted a culture of violence in the sport. According to the players, this conduct was part of the league's money-making strategy and it has led to billions of dollars in revenue for the league.

This is the second time in the past half-year that players have brought a federal class action lawsuit against the NHL in relation to head injuries. One wonders what the result of these lawsuits will be.

Lawsuits can play a vital role in holding sports leagues accountable when they engage in conduct which unreasonably puts their players in danger. Personal injury attorneys can help individuals who have been hurt while playing a team sport in a league determine if negligent actions by the league contributed to their injuries and whether they can take legal action against the league in connection to the injuries.
