Pfizer named in product liability suit filed in Pennsylvania

A product liability lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania against the pharmaceutical company Pfizer for manufacturing and selling a dangerous drug, or so it is in the eyes of the plaintiff. A drug she was taking for one physical condition allegedly caused a medical illness with which she will have to live the rest of her life. A report did not specify the amount of money for which the plaintiff is asking in her product liability suit, but it will be enough to cover past and future medical and legal costs.

The plaintiff describes herself as a healthy young woman who only began taking the drug Lipitor to reduce the future possibility of the development of heart disease. She took the medication for six years and was subsequently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She now risks developing any of the physical difficulties caused by having diabetes, such as kidney disease, blindness and nerve or heart problems.

The woman has claimed in her lawsuit that she never would have taken the drug or she would have regularly checked her blood glucose levels had she been informed of the risks. Her daily regimen, including diet and medical requirements, has now been altered and will continue to be as such for the rest of her life. She also suffers emotionally from not knowing how these medical issues will affect her future.

The product liability lawsuit alleges that Pfizer knew that taking the drug could cause a person to develop diabetes but did not alert physicians or those who were prescribed Lipitor. The company did change how it labeled the drug on the packaging, but the life-long dangers from taking it were not included. Pennsylvania residents taking this drug may want to pay attention to the facts of this case to see if they too should seek medical advice to find out if they are at risk for complications.
