Pennsylvania man drowns after kayak goes over dam

Unfortunately, as more people turn to swimming and other water sports to cool off in the increasingly warm temperatures, drowning accidents also increase. In some cases, the victim's surviving family may be able to file suit against any at-fault party if it can be shown that adequate safety measures were not taken.

A 26-year-old man lost his life in a drowning accident at the Lehigh River dam on May 21. The Forks Township resident and another 23-year-old man were kayaking in separate vessels when the 26-year-old went over the Chain Dam between Riverview Park and Hugh Moore Park.

The victim reportedly got stuck in the hydraulic boil at the bottom of the dam. His friend was able to maneuver around the dam and tried to go into the river to help. The 23-year-old reportedly also had to be rescued out of the river. The 26-year-old was taken to Easton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man leaves behind a fiancee and a daughter, as well as his parents. He was originally from Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, but graduated from college in Scranton. He was employed in the security industry and was certified in law enforcement.

Drowning accidents can be particularly tragic recreational accident, as it's not always clear what contributed to the incident. In this case, it was not known how or why the 26-year-old ended up going over the dam instead of around it. According to officials, these types of low-head dams are particularly dangerous, but it's unclear whether or not there was anything alerting kayakers to the possible dangers.
