Pennsylvania teen suffers fatal head injury in zip line accident

In most cases, summer recreational activities here in Pennsylvania help families make fun memories that are meant to last a lifetime. However, when things go wrong, a day of enjoying the outdoors can become a tragedy.

A teenage boy recently died in a zip line accident while playing outside of a friend's house. According to the medical examiner's office, the 13-year-old boy sustained a head injury in the June 8 accident, which took place in the city of McCandless. According to reports, the zip line was a homemade one, and was located in the backyard of a home where one of the 13-year-old boy's friends lives. The zip line had reportedly been set up so that it ran between two trees in the yard. It was approximately just four feet off of the ground.

The boy, who was due to turn 14 soon, was reportedly injured when one of the zip line fasteners hit him in the back of the head. Sources reported that the fastener came loose before striking the teen. The 13-year-old was taken by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville. He was placed on life support at the hospital, but he died at 2:36 p.m. on June 10. The boy's death was ruled an accident.

Civil litigation may be possible in a recreational accident if the death is the result of a negligent party, lax safety precautions or defective hardware. While obtaining damages in a civil suit won't bring back a loved one, it can help with medical and burial costs. It can also serve as an incentive to others to be more safety-conscious.
