Semi-bicycle crash results in severe injuries

Biking is an enjoyable pastime for many Pennsylvania residents, and cyclists often venture away from the wooded paths or park trails and can be seen on the roads alongside motor vehicles. When drivers aren't paying attention or do not see cyclists, bicycle accidents with tragic consequences may result.

A cyclist was injured on July 10 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, when the bicycle collided with a tractor trailer. According to reports, the accident occurred in Silver Spring Township in the 6600 block of Carlisle Pike. It appears that both the tractor-trailer and the bicycle were headed north on Carlisle Pike around 10:40 p.m. when the semi hit the bicycle close to the Sun Motors car dealership.

The cyclists was reportedly seriously injured in the crash and was transported by air to Hershey Medical Center. The 31-year-old man's condition and injuries were not immediately available. The driver of the semi was reportedly uninjured, and the crash was considered to still be under investigation. Both the Pennsylvania State Police and the Silver Spring Township Police are said to be involved in the case, and the tractor-trailer driver was reported to be cooperating with authorities.

In many cases involving bicycle-vehicle accidents, the driver of the motor vehicle may be attempting to pass the bicycle or be distracted and unaware of the cyclist's presence on the road. These types of accidents often result in serious injury or death to the cyclist, and those injured — or the surviving family members — may be able to seek compensation from the courts to help with medical expenses and rehabilitation or to make up for loss of companionship.
