Experimental aircraft crashes in Pennsylvania, pilot survives

A Pennsylvania man was injured after his experimental aircraft crashed into a bank just south of a Grove City Regional Airport runway. According to reports, the Aug. 1 accident occurred around 11:08 p.m. The airport manager placed the 911 call after going to the crash site and finding the pilot — in his 70s — still alive. STATMedEvac arrived on the scene and took the man by air to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

The man was identified as the president of the Grove City Experimental Aircraft Association and had reportedly been practicing landing the aircraft prior to the crash. According to the airport manager, the pilot successfully landed the plane three times but crashed 200 feet away from the runway the fourth time. It was not yet clear how the man got that far from the runway, but the airport manager was quoted describing the pilot as "very inexperienced."

It took responders, which included STATMedVac, Superior ambulance, Pennslyvania State police and firefighters from Springfield Township, 45 minutes to extract the pilot from the plane. The aircraft was described as a yellow Volksplane, and the airport manager said the man had been working on the plane for years and had flown it last year as well.

While flying is a thrill unlike any other, especially if you are the pilot, it is also an extremely risky recreational activity. Many things can go wrong, and if a crash is found to be caused by faulty parts, an air control issue or another party's negligence, there may be legal options available to those injured in the accident.
