Pennsylvania man dead after bicycle accident

A Pennsylvania man was killed in a bicycle accident after the bike was struck by an SUV on Aug. 4. According to reports, both the SUV and the bicycle were heading northbound on Route 222 in Providence Township around 6:30 a.m. The crash occurred as the SUV was attempting to pass the bicycle.

The 76-year-old rider was pronounced dead at the scene by the chief deputy coroner. Police reported that the driver of the SUV was cooperating with the investigation. Police believe that fog may have played a role in the fatal accident. The road was closed from Fairview Road to Oak Bottom Road while responders were on scene.

Fatal bicycle accidents are rare, accounting for only 1.5 to 2.3 percent of fatal crashes across the country during a nine-year period, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The majority of these types of accidents in Pennsylvania take place during the daylight hours, and young riders between the ages of 5 and 14 and are the most likely to be injured. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, 20 percent of injuries caused by bicycle accidents occur in this age demographic.

Bicyclists may be more at risk of injury because bicycles offer little to no protection from the impact of a crash and riders may not always be wearing helmets or have them properly fitted, which can result in a serious head injury requiring long-term medical care. When a bicycle accident is caused by the driver of a vehicle being negligent or failing to leave adequate room between the car and the bike, the injured party — or the surviving family members in the case of a fatality — may be able to seek compensation through the courts.
