BMX and motocross: When accidents happen

While motocross and BMX may seem to involve an element of danger by their very design, Pennsylvania residents who participate in these activities are knowledgeable about the safety precautions and equipment involved and understand the risks. Crashes are not always due to some error on the part of the rider and can be caused by a variety of external factors outside of the rider's control.

BMX accidents can be caused by courses that have not been properly maintained, collisions with other bikers, animals or objects, or even a defect in the bike itself. Even something as seemingly minor as a pothole in the road or rock on track can cause a serious accident and severe injuries. These types of biking accidents often involve the rider being thrown off of the bike, but in others, the bike can land on the rider, creating additional force with the impact and causing more injury.

BMX and motocross riders have relatively little protection in the event of a crash, even if they are wearing the proper safety gear and helmets. Depending on the nature of the accident and the impact, a rider may suffer injuries such a broken bones, internal bleeding or paralysis due to a spinal injury.

Because of the risk-taking nature of the sport, insurance companies may balk at paying what they should. When an insurance company refuses to pay, an attorney can help you understand the next steps and walk you through the process. Having legal representation can also help make the court experience less stressful, leaving you free to focus on healing.
