Statistics for boating accidents from 2013

The last full year for which boating accident statistics have been compiled is 2013, and the report that was put out by the Coast Guard and related organizations can shed some light on how common accidents were in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

On the whole, there were 4,062 accidents that were recorded by the Coast Guard. In these accidents, a significant amount of property damage was done, with a rough total cost of $39 million. There were 2,620 reported injuries, and 560 people passed away as a result of these accidents.

To convert these numbers into overall rates, one must look at how many deaths happened for each 100,000 boats that have been registered. There were 4.7 deaths per 100,000 boats. This is actually a significant drop from 2012, when there were 5.4 deaths per 100,000 boats. The drop is about 13 percent.

The fatality rate showed a decrease, and as one may expect, the total rate of accidents also went down, though it only dropped by about 10 percent. Likewise, the injury rate fell by a full 12.7 percent.

In fact, the total numbers have declined quite a bit in a little more than a decade. Back in 2001, there were 6,419 total accidents, 4,274 injuries and 681 deaths.

For Pennsylvania specifically, there were 71 accidents in 2013. These resulted in 16 deaths and 35 cases in which injuries that did not lead to death were reported. The value of the property damage was found to be $132,623.

If you have been injured in a boating accident or if you've lost a loved one, you need to know about your right to compensation.
