Paraplegic's family blames resort for skiing accident

Last month, a Midwest family decided to pursue damages relating to their teenage son's skiing accident, which left him a paraplegic. Tragically, the boy was hurt after launching himself from a ski jump at a ski resort. The accident crushed his c-6 vertebra and caused him to suffer permanently paralyzing spinal cord damage.

The family is now holding the ski resort responsible for its negligence, which allegedly led to the accident. According to the family, the teen used a "Big Air" ski jump, which was left over from a professional skiing and snowboarding competition that took place several days prior to the accident. At first, the ski jump was closed to the public following the competition, but it was later opened for general public use.

The teen was traveling too fast on his snowboard when he made use of the jump, which caused him to fly past the landing area. He suffered spinal cord injuries when he came crashing into a zone that was not intended for landings.

The lawsuit claims that the ski resort is negligent and liable because it failed to place notices regarding the dangers associated with using the jump. Also, the suit claims that the ski jump was not in the same condition as it was during the competition, which made it even more dangerous.

Pennsylvania residents hurt in skiing accidents may have claims for damages relating to their injuries depending on how the accident occurred. For example, if it is determined that a ski resort's negligence in properly maintaining a safe skiing environment led to the accident, then the individual might have a viable claim. Ultimately, every case is different and its unique facts, accident scene evidence and medical records must be reviewed to evaluate the viability of a potential suit.
