Snowmobile accident claims life of 31-year-old man on frozen lake

A 31-year-old man succumbed to fatal injuries from a snowmobile accident that happened earlier in March. The sheriff's office was first contacted about the incident at approximately 11:15 p.m., on a Saturday evening. The fatally injured man was traveling with friends when the collision occurred. The sheriff's department representative reported that numerous individuals use snowmobiles to travel to different places around the lake.

According to a representative from the Sheriff's department, the man was traveling on a frozen lake when he collided with a small island or piece of land that jutted out from the ice. The impact caused the snowmobile to launch through the air. No other fatalities or injuries were reported regarding the crash.

Friends of the wounded man performed CPR on him until emergency medical crews arrived. The emergency responders also tried to perform CPR on the man when they arrived; however, they were unable to save him. He was later pronounced dead at the crash site.

Sheriff's deputies suspect that alcohol and speed played important roles in causing this crash. This theory is based on witness reports. The group of friends was heading back to their cabin after going to a local bar. The crash is still being investigated, though, so it is unknown if another party may be negligently liable for this man's death. For example, did the snowmobile have a stuck accelerator, defective breaks or some other dangerous defect?

This young man's loss is clearly a tragedy that will be felt by his friends, family and anyone else he had dealings with in his community. At the very least, it is hoped that his death will serve a reminder to snowmobilers in Pennsylvania and other parts of the country that the sport comes with real dangers. We must all be exceedingly careful whenever we operate one of these machines.
