What are major causes of fatal parking lot accidents?

The one thing that drivers in Pennsylvania cannot avoid is parking their vehicles. Whether it is in a parking ramp, a parking lot or on the side of the street, drivers need to be aware of their surroundings when parking a vehicle or leaving a parking spot. Failure to do so could result in a fatal parking lot accident.

What are major causes of fatal parking lot accidents? According to national statistics, a parking lot is a rather common accident site. Roughly one in every five motor vehicle collisions takes place in a parking lot. There are many reasons that make a parking lot such a vulnerable location for collisions involving injuries, fatalities and damages.

One major reason is the false sense of security motorists and pedestrians feel when traveling in a parking lot. Because the traffic tends to move very slowly, caution tends to take the backseat when traveling in a parking lot. In matters involving pedestrian accidents in parking lots, most of these collisions occur when a vehicle is traveling in or out of a parking space. Approximately 210 pedestrians are killed by a vehicle in a parking lot each year while roughly 5,000 are injured.

The actions of a driver frequently contribute to a parking lot accident. Motorists tend to keep an eye on a vacant spot, and in their attempt to get to that spot, they neglect to keep an eye out for other drivers and pedestrians in the area. Backing out of a packing spot is also vulnerable to fatal accidents. If a driver fails to move slowly and properly check their mirrors and blind spots, they could collide with another vehicle or a person.

Following a fatal parking lot accident, it is important that proper investigation is conducted. This can help determine cause and assign fault and liability. If a negligent driver caused the fatal crash, the loved ones of the deceased could file a wrongful death suit against that party for compensation for their losses and damages they suffered from the tragic incident.
