Proposal made to increase work zone safety in Pennsylvania

During the warmer months, residents in Pennsylvania often see an increase in travel across the state. In addition, these months are also when construction increases on all types of roadways in the state. It is important to ensure the safety and quality of the roads, and it is equally important l that drivers use caution in work zones. Just like pedestrians and motorists are at risk of being involved in an accident with a negligent driver, negligence by a motorist in a construction area could lead to a fatal work zone accident with construction workers and other travelers in the area.

After a recent fatal work zone crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, letters were sent to state Senators and lawmakers regarding the safety in work zones in the state. Individuals are interested in new laws being passed in order to strengthen the safety in work zones for workers and motorists.

One safety measure currently being considered is the addition of speed cameras. This could help ensure that drivers are following the speed limits posted in work zones. Many argue that is it not only imperative that the state invest in making the roads safe for travelers but also important that the state make roads safer for those repairing and improving Pennsylvania's roads.

This proposal would create a five-year pilot program that utilizes automated speed enforcement on interstate highways. If motorists are caught speeding, they could be subjected to a fine of $100. The overall goal of this program is to reduce speeding and collisions in work zones.

While taking an initiative and implementing programs such as the one discussed above could help reduce and prevent some fatal accidents in work zones, unfortunately, these types of accidents still occur. If a loved one suffered fatal injuries and lost his or her life in a fatal work zone accident, family members should understand the rights afforded to them. A civil action such as a wrongful death suit could help surviving loved ones recover compensation for their losses and damages.
