What are the non-visible effects of a brain injury?

Brain injuries are possible injuries that can occur in a variety of sports. Think about the hits to the head that occur in football games. Think about the falls that are possible in boating accidents and other sporting accidents. The common denominator with all of those head injuries is that a brain injury might occur. Brain injuries have some very serious effects. Some of those effects are visible, but others aren't visible.

What are some non-visible effects of a brain injury?

A person who has a brain injury might suffer from depression, anger and other emotional changes. These can range from mild mood swings to violent outbursts. In many cases, the mood swings, anger and depression are very short lived, but can occur often.

How can a TBI patient cope with these effects?

Coping with the emotional effects of a TBI can be challenging for a TBI patient because they are caused by damage to the middle and front of the brain. When these areas are damaged, primitive actions rule. Those actions are often angry and uncontrollable. The good news is that when the anger occurs, it is usually followed by a change of mood after only a short time. In some cases, taking a time out from triggers can help the patient to control the mood swings, depression or anger.

Counseling and other therapies are often needed to help TBI patients and their family members to cope with the emotional changes. For some, the costs might place a financial strain on the family. It is sometimes possible to lessen that strain by seeking compensation.
