When an injury is caused by someone boating under the influence

Sadly, many residents in Pennsylvania have been personally impacted by drunk driving -- whether that impact was through an accident or because a friend or family member suffered injuries in an accident. While it affects a smaller number of people, boating while under the influence of either alcohol or drugs is also a big safety concern.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, the top factor involved in boating accidents with fatalities is alcohol use. Alcohol and drugs are reportedly involved in half of the boating accidents that occur across the nation.

When the person operating a boat of any type or size is under the influence of a substance, they put everyone on the water and in their own craft in danger. Accidents on the water can be very serious, even at slow speeds. In addition to injuries you might expect to see in a collision between any moving vehicles, individuals on the water also face drowning risks. Even a crash at slow speeds could fling a person from the boat, causing them to be knocked unconscious before hitting the water or while in the water.

If you are injured in a boating accident and the fault for the accident is with another person, you might have a viable claim for compensation. Compensation in such instances might cover medical expenses, property damage and loss of wages.

If the authorities believe that someone caused a boating accident while operating the craft while under the influence, they might arrest or otherwise penalize the person in addition to any civil action that you seek. Even if the person is not officially accused of operating under the influence, if you can make a case for that, you might increase your change at compensation.
