Mechanical failure may have caused Pennsylvania plane crash

Three men are dead after a small plane taking off from a private airstrip at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington crashed shortly after takeoff. Reports state that after the plane took off, one of its doors malfunctioned, fell off and hit one wing of the plane. The plane then crashed into some trees, where it caught fire. Bystanders also report having heard a sound that could have indicated engine failure right before the crash. The plane was reported to have been a single-engine Beechcraft BE36 (Bonanza), a model which has been in production since 1947.

While the incident is under investigation, it is possible that the crash could have been due to some sort of mechanical malfunction. Many small-plane accidents are blamed on pilot error or other human failure like faulty or inadequate maintenance. But mechanical or design failures can prove just as deadly.

Small-aircraft accidents happen with much greater frequency than commercial airliner accidents. Certainly some are the result of pilot error. But there are many mechanical issues that can contribute to an accident as well.

Of course, small-plane manufacturers can be counted on to fight charges of design or manufacture failure, because a verdict against them would cost them money and create unwelcome publicity. But until such design or manufacturing failures can be conclusively ruled out, the possibility remains that tragic accidents like the one that happened in Pennsylvania could have been avoided were it not for the actions of a company that may have been more concerned with the bottom line than with safety. And a company that is concerned primarily with its own bottom line will not tend to want to provide compensation for accident victims voluntarily. That's where having a strong legal advocate on your side after an accident can help greatly as you pursue justice and appropriate compensation for losses and expenses related to an aviation accident.
