Imagine waking up halfway through a surgery. You can hear what's going on around you, and feel pressure if not pain. But you're paralyzed, and can't communicate that you're awake. This terrifying scenario unfortunately is not something out of science fiction. It's called anesthesia awareness, and it happens to patients every year.

Even when his or her surgery is technically "successful," a patient who experiences anesthesia awareness is likely to face post-operative complications like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), nightmares, insomnia and other anxiety-based symptoms. Anesthesia awareness is more likely to occur during procedures where a lighter dose of anesthesia is typically used; for example, during a cesarean section surgery.

Medical professionals are responsible for ensuring that patients who undergo surgery are unconscious for the duration of the procedure. When they fail in that duty, they may find themselves at the receiving end of a medical malpractice lawsuit. A lawsuit could charge that medical professionals had been negligent in administering anesthesia, and/or that the equipment they used to deliver anesthesia had been defective.

Anesthesia awareness, unfortunately, isn't the only anesthesia-related error that can result in harm to a patient. Patients may also sue when medical professionals fail to provide enough anesthesia, or when they administer too much, or if they give anesthesia to someone who is allergic to it or who is taking incompatible medications. If you or a loved one has been harmed by an anesthesia-related error, contact a medical malpractice lawyer who has experience with these types of cases.
