Interstate crash kills 3, sends 73 to the hospital

A weather-related accident on Pennsylvania's Interstate 78 on the morning of February 13 has left three people dead and 73 injured in the wake of a 64-vehicle pileup. The accident occurred in the westbound lane of Interstate 78 in Bethel Township. Twelve commercial vehicles, including box trucks and tractor-trailers, were reportedly involved in the crash, which shut down both lanes of the highway throughout the night.

Reduced visibility because of blowing snow and sudden whiteout conditions are thought to have been responsible for the crash. It is unclear exactly how the multi-vehicle crash played out. But in some cases, drivers slowed down suddenly in reaction to the snowy conditions, and other cars then rear-ended them.

The accident serves as a reminder of how dangerous and unpredictable winter weather can become at a moment's notice. Commercial truck drivers can be just as susceptible to these rapidly changing conditions as other drivers. But when a truck loses control on the road, the potential for injury to people in smaller nearby cars increases. That's why truck drivers are required to exercise extreme caution in dangerous weather conditions, slowing down significantly or even stopping if the weather conditions warrant doing so.

If you've been in an accident you believe was caused in part by a truck driver's failure to reduce his or her speed to a sufficient degree in harsh weather, you may have grounds to pursue a personal injury lawsuit to help pay for medical treatment and other costs associated with your injuries.
