Hundreds of people die every year in bike accidents

While the data we are about to discuss is a couple of years old, it still illustrates the risk that bicyclists face out on the road. Data from 2013 shows that 743 people were killed in bicycle vs. motor vehicle accidents, and another 48,000 people suffered injuries in those accidents. Both of those figures are up from 2001, even though they represent a decline from 2011. As you can see, bike accident statistics fluctuate a bit even though they follow a general trend.

Bicyclists are just inherently in a bad position. They share the road with larger, more powerful vehicles, and the bicyclists don't even have the luxury of the vehicle protecting them -- like drivers and passengers of motor vehicles do.

But that doesn't mean bicyclists deserve what they get. Road safety is a key concern for all people, but it is especially important for bicyclists. They need to be protected. Drivers of other vehicles need to be especially aware of bikers out on the road. If they aren't, they could run into a bicyclist and ultimately be held responsible for the wreck.

If you are a bicyclist, you should consider taking measures to protect yourself out on the road. First, you should always wear a helmet. Second, you should wear reflective clothing that makes you visible to drivers during the day, but especially at night. Last but not least, you can attach a video camera to your helmet or to your bike to record your rides. This can help you immensely if you decide to file a lawsuit against a driver that struck you because you may have video evidence that proves your side of the case.
