How likely is an aviation accident?

Common comfort provided to people afraid to fly is that the actual change of a commercial airline going down are very slim. The math puts odds in a range between one in 5.4 million and one in 11 million. The odds are higher that you'll be involved in a car accident or suffer a major health crisis, such as a heart attack.

While those statistics can be comforting to someone who is afraid to get on a plane, it is important to note that the likelihood of a plane going down isn't the same thing as the likelihood of an aviation accident. First, airplane crashes -- while not commonplace -- are more likely for small personal or hobby craft. Second, aviation accidents aren't limited to plane crashes.

If you are flying a small airplane or traveling in one, then you can be injured in a crash, landing or take-off incident. You might also be injured by malfunctioning equipment or carelessness before you even enter the plane.

In other cases, aviation accidents might occur because of debris or obstacles in the aisle. Falling on an airplane could cause sprained or broken bones. Unsecured luggage falling on you could cause injury, including head injury or brain damage.

While flying is a relatively safe activity, particularly if you follow guidelines and safety requirements when flying in small craft, it does come with risks. If you are injured in or around an airplane and your injury was the result of someone's negligent actions, then you might have a case for compensation. Compensation in such cases might help cover medical expenses or loss wages or make reparation for pain and suffering.
