Driving in the nation's worst cities for traffic

Coming from Allentown or Philadelphia, you've probably enjoyed jovial queries from friends in other states who ask if you've ever seen the likes of Billy Joel or Sylvester Stallone driving around town. You may have jokingly responded that if they were in the vicinities, they likely were stuck in traffic just like everyone else. Pennsylvania has many dense forests and beautiful scenic hillsides; however, a couple of the state's cities in particular rank among the highest in the nation for worst congested traffic areas.

Traffic delays equal loss of time and money

There's nothing worse than being late for a business meeting because you've been sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic for over an hour. In fact, statistics show traffic pile ups cost drivers like you not only time but money. Consider the following:

  • If you drive in Philadelphia on a regular basis, you may lose over $1,000 and 48 hours of your time per year while sitting in traffic.
  • Pittsburgh's apparently not much better, with nearly 45,000 hours wasted in traffic in 2014. (That's nearly 40 hours per driver.)
  • In Allentown, you stand to lose almost $700 a year sitting behind the wheel, not reaching your destination.

You probably feel frustrated just reading such statistics; yet, as you know, it's best to remain calm in such situations, otherwise problems can occur. When motorists experience road rage or try to hurry their way through traffic, it places you, them and all others in their vicinities at risk for collisions.

Watch out for drivers in a hurry

Have you ever had the misfortune of inching your way through traffic, then, just when you start moving again, a car that seems to have appeared out of nowhere cuts you off? Such negligent behavior has resulted in many crashes in the past. Motorists who are late for work or who are tired and hungry after a long day often make unsafe changes on the road that place you in harm's way. Below are some common dangerous maneuvers that can catch you off-guard and cause accidents:

  • Unsafe lane changes: Many local areas are designed with one-way streets and are narrowed by parking spaces on both sides. If another driver suddenly changes lanes without signaling, it can prove disastrous.
  • Running red lights: Part of what leads to traffic congestion in urban areas is traffic lights. If you are at a busy intersection making a turn or navigating the crossroads on a green light, another car might crash into you if a driver fails to stop at a red light.
  • Speeding: It's never legal to travel above posted speed limits. When traffic is high and movement is slow, all drivers need to act with caution behind their wheels. Anyone speeding to try to get to the front of the line is a danger to all involved.
  • Illegal maneuvers: Speeding is dangerous enough, not to mention those who try to skirt around traffic by flying up the shoulder of a road or otherwise weaving in and out of various lanes in unsafe manners.

If you live or work in Allentown, Philadelphia or another busy Pennsylvania metropolis, you obviously cannot avoid traffic. If an unsafe motorist causes an accident that results in your injury, you retain the right to pursue compensation for the losses you suffer. It's bad enough knowing you waste fuel and money in traffic delays, much less facing unexpected debt due to medical bills, lost wages or other expenses associated with the aftermath of a motor vehicle accident.

If you have questions regarding how to seek legal accountability against a negligent driver, you can obtain answers by discussing the situation with an experienced personal injury attorney.
