What Are The Most Dangerous (And Safest) Cars On The Road?

Sometimes, there isn't a lot you can do to protect yourself against other drivers' carelessness. But having the safest possible car in the event that you do get into a collision with another vehicle can help. So how do you know how safe your car is?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released data for 2017 showing the cars that have earned the highest safety ratings. The data is broken down by car size, from minicar to large pickup.

According to fatality rates for individual cars, the cars that are the safest are the larger ones, like SUVs or other utility trucks. Smaller cars - especially small hatchbacks and four-door minicars - are the most dangerous, in that they provide the least amount of crash protection in the event of a collision.

The five safest cars for 2017 are:

5. Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4WD

4. Jeep Cherokee 4WD

3. Mazda CX-9 2WD

2. Toyota Tacoma Double Cab long bed 4WD

1. Volkswagen Tiguan 2WD

The five most dangerous cars for 2017 are:

5. Nissan Versa

4. Chevrolet Spark

3. Scion tC

2. Kia Rio

1. Hyundai Accent

Of course, the answer to avoiding injury isn't always to run out and buy a larger, more expensive car. And, thankfully, not all car accidents end in fatalities. There are plenty of accidents that result in major and minor injuries, though.

Navigating insurance

If you or a loved one is injured in a car accident, the amount you will be able to recover will depend on the insurance status of both you and the other driver. Obviously, the best-case scenario is when the driver responsible for the accident has good insurance. But this doesn't always happen. What if the driver who hit you has inadequate insurance, or, worse, none at all? This is why it is so essential that drivers carry uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) motorist insurance.

It's also important to have sufficient liability coverage and collision coverage to cover bodily and property damage if you were the one at fault in a crash. Another consideration is medical coverage or Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which covers costs for injuries incurred by people in your car. Some insurance agents will tell you that if you have health insurance, you don't need this coverage. But these are decisions you should make for yourself. Do you want to rely solely on your own health insurance for car accident costs, or would you like an extra layer of protection? Having the proper level of insurance can go a long way to make sure that you and your family are protected in the event of a collision.

Regardless of the type of car you have, if you've been injured, a seasoned motor vehicle accident lawyer can help you through the process of bringing a lawsuit against the responsible party or parties, ensuring that you have access to all the compensation available to help you recover from what you've been through.
