Back-To-School Bus Safety

Summer is starting to wind down, and if your child will be taking a bus to school in the fall, it's worth reminding them how to stay safe getting to and from school. While it's notable that school buses do not (unless they are of the smaller variety) have seat belts, most school bus-related accidents happen when children are getting on and off the bus.

Embarking and disembarking safely

Cars are not allowed to pass school buses that are letting off children. But that doesn't mean an inattentive or reckless driver would never plow through anyway. If your child has to cross in front of the bus when getting off, make sure he or she walks several steps in front and to the side of the bus before crossing the street.

When boarding, your child should let the bus come to a complete stop, let the doors open, and wait for the bus driver to indicate that it's okay to board the bus before getting on.

Your child should never walk behind a bus, as it's difficult for drivers to see them back there. Similarly, if your child drops something under the bus, they should not try to retrieve the item themselves, but rather tell the bus driver about it and ask what to do next.

Slow down and remain attentive

Children who are late for the bus or late for school may be so focused on getting where they're supposed to be that they act impulsively or make risky moves without thinking. Remind your child that their safety is more important than whether or not they get to school on time. No one wants to get the phone call that their child has been injured in a traffic accident. Tell your children to look both ways before crossing the street no matter what.
