Snowmobile Accidents Archives

One sled dog killed, many injured after collision with snowmobile

A snowmobiler has been charged with assault, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief after driving his snowmobile into two sled dog teams during the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The man, 26-year-old Arnold Demoski, claims the incident was an accident, and that he had been driving his snowmobile after a night of drinking. One of the sled team's drivers, Aliy Zirkle, claims that Demoski had circled around several times and driven his machine at her sled multiple times before driving off. One dog is dead and two are seriously injured as a result of the collisions.

Alaska reality show captures snowmobile accident

Last season a reality show on the National Geographic Channel may have captured more reality than it intended when cameramen unwittingly filmed Alaska base camp warden Sue Aikens getting into an accident on her snowmobile. After a painful wait to access appropriate medical care, Aikens ended up with a snapped collar bone and other injuries requiring 14 screws, 2 titanium plates and likely many future surgeries.

Can you get a DUI on a snowmobile?

Yes. Pennsylvania law prohibits riders from operating a snowmobile while under the influence of alcohol or any other drug. Riding a snowmobile requires a great deal of focus and attention to steer and navigate obstacles, and being under the influence of alcohol impairs a driver's ability to respond to these dangers. Riding a snowmobile under the influence of alcohol also endangers the safety of others on the road, whether they are other snowmobilers, drivers, cross-country skiers or pedestrians.

How can you protect yourself on a snowmobile?

Last week, we talked about some common injuries airplane passengers might experience. This week, we're taking a look at injuries that occur on or around snowmobiles and how you might avoid them. For most residents of Pennsylvania, a few weeks of warm weather will linger before the cool days of fall. With weeks or even months before the first snow falls, you have time to prepare snow equipment and vehicles and brush up on safety practices.

Snowmobile accidents: What can happen?

As much as some of us hate to admit it, fall is here and that means winter is right around the corner. The cold temperatures and snowfall aren't all bad, though, and they offer recreational activities you can't get during other times of the year without traveling out of Pennsylvania. Snowmobiles are winter's answer to four-wheelers and while snowmobiling is a popular and enjoyable pastime, it also carries its own risk of accidents.

Snowmobile driver injured in collision with station wagon

As winter begins to thaw, people throughout Pennsylvania are putting away their snowmobiles and getting out the boating and fishing gear. Unfortunately, many people won't be able to enjoy the outdoors as much this year because of injuries suffered in snowmobile accidents.
