Brain Injury: A Lasting Trauma

Head and brain injuries including concussion, brain bleeding, skull fractures, brain swelling, and brain injury can cause permanent injury, disability, or even death. The victims of these injuries often have complex medical cases with unique injuries, symptoms, and circumstances. Here at Cohen, Feeley, Altemose & Rambo, we recognize that each client is different and we build a case around the client and not just the client's diagnosis.

Brain Injury: A Lasting Trauma

According to The Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania, there are 10 million Americans living with brain injury, including stroke. Every 21 seconds, someone sustains Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in this country, resulting in 1.4 million new TBIs each year. TBIs occur when an external force causes injury to the brain, and is the leading cause of disability and death of children and teens, with over 1 million children suffering brain injuries each year. Across the United States each year, 30,000 children will suffer severe disability as the result of brain injury.

The leading causes of TBIs are:

  • Falls (20%)

  • Motor vehicle or traffic crashes (20%)

  • Struck by or against (19%)

  • Assaults (11%)

Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) occurs when the cause of brain injury is not traumatic, such as a tumor, stroke or aneurysm, complications of surgery, near-drowning, certain diseases, or ingestion of toxic substances.

Brain injury symptoms include:

  • Headaches

  • Confusion

  • Dizziness

  • Blurred vision

  • Slurred speech

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Weakness or numbness in the extremities

  • Loss of coordination
