Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse

Someone is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds in the United States, and every 8 minutes, that victim is a child.

Many cases of sexual abuse are never reported to authorities and many others are reported years after the incident. Children often avoid talking about the abuse until they are adults because they are afraid of a negative reaction from relatives and authorities and of being further harmed by their abuser.

If you, your child, or someone you love was the victim of sexual abuse, you may have grounds for a lawsuit. It is important to keep in mind that each state has different time limits on the right to sue for injuries arising from sexual abuse. Pennsylvania allows victims to file such lawsuits until the age of 30, while New Jersey allows only two years from the time of “reasonable discovery” of the harm. Therefore it is important that you contact an experienced attorney as soon as possible if you or a loved one are a victim of sexual abuse.
